Bone marrow drive for Brooklyn boy with rare disease

Bobby and Elisa Seeger are very good friends of ours. Our thoughts and prayers go out to them in this time of need. If you would like to get tested to see if you are a bone marrow match for their son Aidan, please go to http://www.marrow.org to begin the process.
A Brooklyn community is coming together to help a child suffering from a rare disease.
6-year-old Aidan Seeger loves listening to music, riding his scooter and crunching the numbers.
"My favorite number is 5095," Aidan Seeger said.
The first grader is in the fight for his life and his parents don't know how to tell him.
"We're trying to capture every moment because we don't know if it's the last one," said Bob Seeger Junior, Aidan's dad.
Aidan has ALD, a rare and rapid moving brain disorder that destroys nerve cells. Most times it leads to a coma and eventually death.
Aidan's teacher noticed he was holding his books really close to his face when he was reading. She told the 6 year old's parents to have it checked out. Doctors diagnosed him with the life threatening disease two weeks ago.
"I just stood in the street and cried because that's my body's reaction. I'm thinking my little baby blue eyed boy that's not going to see is he going to be here today or tomorrow?" Seeger said.
"We need four samples from you. Top bottom, bottom top. You're going to scrub for 10 seconds like you're brushing your teeth"- this was the instruction given to Aidan's potential life savers.
P.S. 154 held a bone-marrow drive at his school in Windsor Terrace this afternoon. They tested and registered dozens of people. They're hoping and praying for a match for Aidan and others like him. Sadly, Aidan's 4 year old sister Sienna is not compatible.
A University of Minnesota doctor agreed to do an experimental treatment that would include chemotherapy, radiation and hopefully a bone-marrow transplant
"I've seen a lot of people coming and going. It gives me goose bumps. It's a great turnout", said Melissa Fletcher, a potential donor.
"They're here. They're opening up their hearts. There are people who blow me away," Seeger said.
Aidan's parents took a last minute trip to Disney world and are doing just about everything Aidan can dream of. They don't how long they have so they're making the most of their time together.

This year the Big Mountain Run is scheduled for May 18th through the 22rd, 2011 and the line up is outrageous. To give everyone that wanted to do this last year and couldn't make it, we are keeping the gypsy run almost exactly the same.

Tuesday night there will be a pre-run party at Wicked Willy’s Choppers in Taylorsville, NC, the same place we will meet in the morning to leave by noon. From there we will take a two day Gypsy Tour through the Smokey Mountains stopping the first night at the Wheels Through Time Museum in Maggie Valley. These cats roll out the red carpet for us with a complete tour of the best motorcycle museum in the world. Camping is right on site that night and the next morning we take on the Dragon. US 129, the most notorious motorcycle road known to man. Then we cross the Cherahola Sky way and wind down through the hills to Reliance Tennessee for a three night party at Hiawassee Outfitters campground right on the river.

For BMR veterans we have a few alternate routes planned out with other folks that have mapped out some killer roads as well. The Century-Rocket ^TM frame shown “fuses” the “old-school look” of vintage 1970s small-diameter tubular members with modern-era Sportster motors (1986-2003). This frame is constructed of rugged, 0.120”- wall, AISI 1020 DOM tubing, having 1” frame rails with a 1-1/2” backbone and seat post. Also features a 5” forward x 2” up-stretch x 38-degree rake. This configuration takes a +4 over fork assembly. The frames are set up for acceptance of chain-driven 130mm tires.

All frame models are TIG-welded in our new patent-pending, adjustable/rotisserie-style jig. The frame is completely welded, stress-relieved, and cooled without removal from this jig - which minimizes distortion and maintains accuracy. (TBW has recently made this novel, adjustable jig commercially available to any frame builder or custom bike builder.)

RetroFrames^TMare computer-engineered in SolidWorks CAD software, followed by a corresponding stress/strain-field finite-element-analysis (FEA) performed in COSMOSWorks. RKS plastics inc claims to be Made in USA, so I ordered poly bags for my parts packaging.......the website,the invoice, and even the free calendar they sent all state "all our products are proudly made in USA".....I first got suspicious of this place when I got an email from a guy named Mustaff Arod Upyerpooper (or something like that) thanking me for my order, but then I figured hey ..melting pot right? Problem I have is that when I opened the package low and behold..........MADE IN THAILAND stamped right on the product!!! I tried several emails asking for an explanation and get no reply. Even lower than the greedy bastards getting rich off of giving away their neighbors jobs while supporting communist child slave labor and the forced meth use of factory workers..........is the asshole who tries to Use Made in USA as a false selling point to pawn off his foreign bullshit trash product....might as well call the guy Toby Keith for crying out loud!!!!

BAKER Drivetrain has had their hands full since the last V-Twin Dealer Show. BAKER is débuting several new projects this year starting with the TTP otherwise known as the “Tin Type Primary” available in starter or kick only applications. BAKER took the classic 1936-64 tin primary design and re-constructed it with aircraft grade 6061-T6 aluminum to facilitate 1970-E84 Big Twin alternator motor case compatibility. BAKER addressed leaks, reduction in chain noise, and make modern starter integration possible. The Modern internal design of the primary utilizes stock style double row primary chains (428 chains) along fine tooth and L-bracket chain tensioner. The chain oiler feed and return provisions mimic the original primary setup so you can run your stock Shovelhead dry clutch components or leave it plugged off to run a wet clutch setup. Starter version is setup for factory 1.4kw 1990-2006 starters. Compatible with traditional tin derby and inspection covers or BAKER TTP Covers (sold separately).

The TTP utilizes the 1955-64 non-compensator style motor sprockets in order to keep that tight/sleek appearance. Primary drive configurations are -24 tooth motor sprocket, 37 tooth clutch sprocket, and stock 82 pitch primary chain, for a 1.54 primary reduction. 24 tooth motor sprocket is maximum size that fits within the TTP envelope. -22 tooth motor sprocket, 35 tooth clutch sprocket, and 80 pitch primary chain (available through BAKER) for a 1.59 primary reduction. -23 tooth motor sprocket, 38 tooth clutch sprocket, and stock 82 pitch primary chain for a 1.65 reduction. Available bead blasted raw or fully show polished.

The BAKER Shovelhead Splined Clutch 1970-E84 is based off of their 9-plate clutch used on 1990-up applications and fits in the stock primary housing and TTP. BAKER offers 8620 gear steel 35, 36, 37, and 38 tooth clutch sprockets with their clutches, to dial in your overall gear ratio. The new splined clutch comes with or without 66T starter ring gear. BAKER’s one piece 66T starter ring gear and kick only clutch basket design is made out of 1145 steel, induction hardened T0 45-55 Rockwell C scale for years of wear free use. 9 two-sided kevlar clutch plates, deliver ample holding power for up to 125 ft-lbs of continuous use. Featuring a 6061-T651 aircraft grade billet aluminum pressure plate that is hard anodized for durability and specially designed diaphragm spring with ergonomic break-over feel during engagement yet having strong holding power when you put the throttle down.

Now if your thinking my shovelhead has a tapered shaft, BAKER offers the splined Shovel clutch kit. You know the sad story. The torque on the clutch nut backs off a hair and the key on the transmission mainshaft shears off. This usually happens at the most inconvenient time and place. And the probability of this sad story playing out is greater with performance applications. The kit Retrofits and upgrades the stock tapered mainshaft and clutch to a modern 18 tooth spline configuration. Kit includes a fully assembled clutch and splined 4-speed mainshaft to retrofit stock 1970-E84 Big Twins has an 18 tooth mainshaft to install into your stock 4 Speed.

The Jockey Top Cover is a new product to complete the puzzle BAKER started last year with the release of their 4 Speed for 1936-E84 models. The BAKER Jockey Top like the Ratchet Top comes with a snot-slick linear ball bearing detent for that smooth positive ‘snick-pop’ shift quality you would expect. Made out of aircraft grade 6061-T6 billet aluminum with hidden vent and sealed shift shaft make this cover leak free. Available in FL / FX shift patterns, blasted raw, wrinkle black or show polished finish.

And last on the list is BAKER’s new Stash Tube made out of aircraft grade 6061-T6 billet aluminum with a screw on top and a .200” thick O-Ring make for a water-tight seal. Internal diameter is 2.5” by 4” deep giving you plenty of room to conceal your items. Stash tubes come in raw or cat black finish with highlighted fins and fit all Knuckle, Pan and Shovelhead generator right side / alternator left side style motors.

It would seem that any American that still holds dear the tenants of the U.S. Constitution would believe in free trade. Free trade means that any American company or individual is free to buy, sell or trade with any country so desired. Such principles promote competitiveness and higher quality for the consumer, while offering the businessman many options for cost savings. Without delving into a political editorial, it seems most Americans want less government involvement in their lives, both business and personal. A recent Gallup poll shows that 57% of Americans believe the government is too involved in issues that should be left to individuals or private business. So trade should be no different, right? Ideally, yes, but unfortunately all parties involved must take the same approach to trade, or an uneven balance is established. Such an imbalance is shaping the economic world we live in today, and it is affecting the motorcycle world greatly, not to mention manufacturing as a whole.

While it may seem that this column picks on China from time to time, that is not completely true. China is discussed often, and that is due greatly to the fact that China is a huge problem for American jobs, and our government does little about it. One of the biggest inequalities of US-China trade is the tariff gap. Of the top ten US imported goods from China, only one product group, LCD televisions, is subject to duties. This duty is a mere 5%. Conversely, China’s top ten imported products are all subject to either duty, a value added tax (VAT), or both. To compare apples and apples, the US taxes running shoes imported from China at a rate of 10.5%, while China taxes American shoes at a rate of 41%, including the VAT. The US rate is roughly 25% that of China’s. Of the top ten imports for each respective country, the US imposes an average 3% to the declared value, while China tacks on an average of 27%. This obviously creates a different climate for manufacturers eyeing new markets in China, and it proves our government has done little to help the American manufacturer realize competitive price points.
In 2009, all US products were left off the Chinese list of suitable items that could be purchased with consumer subsidies. Subsidies are monies from the government distributed as incentives for meeting certain trade criteria. This contributed to American exports to China falling by 2.6%, while China’s economy grew by a reported 8.8%. In the last 12 months, China has increased tariffs on numerous US exports, including Nylon, chicken, and steel. In the meantime, we have done little, if anything.
This is where the ugly term “protectionism” comes into play. Protectionism is a policy of imposing various trade barriers to protect domestic industry. Protectionism has always been viewed as detrimental to fair trade, and opposes the very principles of liberty our country was founded upon. But where can the line between fair trade and protectionism be drawn? Simply put, our lawmakers must demand the same regulations be imposed for goods coming and going from each respective country. This does not constitute protectionism as we are not seeking to protect our industries from foreign competition, but we are demanding our businesses are afforded the same duty and tax incentives our global counterparts are offered. Until China and other exporting countries lower the excise and duties on goods coming from the US, we should meet every one of their products with a similar tariff when it hits our shores. This will either make the thought of importing goods less appealing to American retailers, or it will promote additional exports from our country. Either way, the American manufacturer benefits. There is a World Trade Organization rule that allows a member nation to impose an across the board duty on all Chinese imports. This duty would be proportionate to the trade deficit we have with China. As the deficit falls, so does the duty amount. This will eventually create a trade balance.
In addition to import tariffs, anti-dumping laws can be implemented. Dumping is the practice of flooding a region with cheaper, foreign goods at prices below market value to crush a particular sector or industry and effectively kill the competition. This frees the market of domestic goods, leaving only the imported product. This is obviously not fair trade, and should be disallowed. There are similar practices being used by domestic companies to weed out the smaller, independent retail stores when large chain outlets move into an area. While this type of market manipulation is unethical, it may not be up to the government to watchdog this, but instead for the people to identify such practices and avoid suppliers that hurt our economy and jobs with such unscrupulous activity.
Another topic that must be discussed is the need for environmental and labor standards to be similar, if not the same, from one country to the next. We will have a future installment that delves deeply into this subject, but for argument’s sake, we cannot expect our domestic manufacturers to compete on a global stage against foreign producers that have either loose standards or no standards relative to the environment and labor. These two expenditures are the greatest for American manufacturers and are arguably the foremost reasons jobs and manufacturing are outsourced.
It is scary to ever ask our government to get involved in anything other than delivering the mail, paving the streets, or protecting our borders. But this is a topic that must be addressed and you have the power to make a difference. Aside from the normal write your congressman spiel, you can investigate further, and choose to avoid retailers that promote the type of practices discussed here by offering Chinese made products. Regardless of what our government does, if we refuse to buy inferior imported goods, the problem will slowly recede, and many of our countrymen can go back to work. Besides, when was the last time your mail was on time, the street well paved, and well, we know the problem at the border. So, let’s not rely too much on Uncle Sam; let’s do it ourselves.

To the classic roar of freedom at a "Support the Troops Rally" style event, a record-breaking two thousand cheering Operation Gratitude volunteers witnessed the arrival of a very special gift to be sent in the organization's 600,000th Care Package: A 2011 Victory Vegas 8-Ball.

SSG Elizabeth Cowie, co-founder of the organization, rode the bike onto the drill floor and added the bike's key, along with several other unique gifts, to the Milestone package, proudly assembled and held by Ann Kurachi, a cheerleader from Trabuco Hills High School. Kurachi was flanked by Santa Claus and dozens of Military dignitaries, elected officials and Operation Gratitude "Hard Corps" Volunteers.

Carolyn Blashek, who started the organization in 2003, thanked Victory Motorcycles, a division of Polaris Industries, for their generous donation of the motorcycle, and recognized the tens of thousands of volunteers, donors and supporters who have contributed throughout the years to the assembly and shipment of 600,000 care packages.
"Operation Gratitude Care Packages are an expression of enormous respect and appreciation for those who voluntarily put themselves in harm's way to protect our freedom," exclaimed Blashek. "This exciting 600,000th package event represents a celebration of all the brave Americans who wear the uniform of our great nation. We are honored to send this package to a young Service Member currently deployed in harm's way, who represents all our courageous heroes-- past, present and future--from all branches of the Military."

In addition to the all-black, Victory Vegas 8-Ball cruiser, the 600,000th package will include a year's supply of both Emergen-C and 5 Hour Energy, a lovingly hand-made scarf, a Flip camera from Café Press, a DVD player, a MEElectronics M-9 Earphone Set, t-shirts and hats from Victory Motorcycles, Operation Gratitude and UCLA, a signed picture from the Minnesota Vikings Cheerleaders, and assorted items and personal letters provided by more than 250 Corporate Sponsors and Friends, and by tens of thousands of individual donors across the country.
A secret but very special delivery of the 600,000^th Care Package is underway.
The winners of the "Guess the Halloween Candy Weight," contest were announced, having guessed within a few pounds the total weight of candy donated to Operation Gratitude through December 3: 178,056 pounds, 14 ounces (89 Tons) .
Blashek and Cowie informed the energetic crowd that the 600,000th package represented:
~ 4.8 Million pounds, equal to 2 ½ million TONS of product
~ $6 Million of postage
~ 30 Million individual items
~ $60 Million worth of product
sent to the troops through Operation Gratitude since its inception in 2003.
Operation Gratitude Volunteers were honored to work side by side with Brigadier General Mary Kight, the Adjutant General of California, Major General John Harrel, the Commander of Army forces in California, Command Sergeant Majors William Clark and Bob Brickley, the senior enlisted Soldiers in California and South Carolina, respectively, plus representatives from several Corporate Sponsors, Women in Film, members of the Motorcycle community, and dozens of school, church, scout and civic organizations.
Significant check presentations were made by Cinnabon, Inc ($50,000), Merrell Down and Dirty Mud Run ($33,800), Lake Havasu Patriot Days ($34,000 plus 1000 Stuffed Animals, 200 hand-made Scarves and 5000 letters), and National Charity League, San Fernando Valley Chapter
& Coast to Coast Computer Products ($20,000).
During the lunch hour, Volunteers were treated to a delicious meal generously provided by the Rotary Club of Lancaster. Corporate Sponsor Alacer distributed samples of its Emergen-C products, two million packets of which have been included in Operation Gratitude packages since 2004.
The 2011 Victory Vegas 8-Ball has a new 106 cubic inch Freedom V-Twin engine, a 6 speed overdrive transmission, and 113 ft-pounds of torque. The bike will be customized with the "Victory Military Salute Badge," the symbol of Victory's gratitude to the men and women who sacrifice for our freedom.
With the shipment of its 600,000th package, Operation Gratitude wrapped up its 2010 Holiday Drive, having assembled more than 100,000 care packages for U.S. Service Members this year.

We’ve been offering this column for about six months now, and every month we try to bring useful, factual information that will help you understand the importance of Buying American. You may not agree with our opinions and conclusions, but we do bring you the facts: cold, hard statistics. Most anyone knows that stats are nothing more than numbers without an insightful, knowledgeable interpretation to accompany. So many of you have written and emailed us to tell your personal stories of how the economic climate coupled with our trade policies (not to mention immigration) have crippled your respective wellbeing. We are often asked how you can help, how you can be sure you are Buying American. All of the stats and mumbo jumbo in the world can be thrown at you, but if you aren’t taking the proper steps and asking the right questions, you will never defeat this monster that is sucking the life out of our futures. So this month, with direct focus upon the motorcycle industry, we will pose the same questions you should ask the next time you are making a purchase for your motorcycle. It goes without saying that these same principles apply to basically each and every purchase you make, motorcycle or not. And for those of you that are manufacturing motorcycle parts, ask yourself these very same questions the next time you slap that Made in USA sticker on your box. You might just get called out if you are not selling a piece 100% American made.

Material Origin: One of the very first things I learned in manufacturing is to be sure of the source of your material. Not only are American made steels far superior to their imported counterparts, our steel industry supports thousands upon thousands of American jobs and it used to be a lot more. Consider this; in 1900 the US was producing nearly 40% of the world’s steel. 100 years later, guess who is now producing 40% of our steel? It’s Asia, of course, with the entire North American continent only accounting for about 15% of the world’s steel production. So when you call your favorite local shop and order up the latest, coolest “American Made” doodad, be sure you ask if it is constructed of certified US steel. Don’t be afraid to ask if they have the papers to prove it. Any steel yard in the country can and should provide this. Don’t think it matters? Ask any welder worth his salt what the difference in quality is between US steel and the junk Asian material. Down to the Last Nut & Bolt: We’ve all heard the story about how only 51% of a new automobile is required to originate in the US to be considered American made. For many of us, that is 100% unacceptable. Look at many of the parts in the motorcycle market that sport the Made in USA moniker, but use Chinese bearings. Look closely at the fasteners, and you will realize how often corners are cut when finishing a product by buying inferior, cheaper hardware. For instance, our shop, Bare Knuckle Choppers, has a number of products that utilize shoulder bolts. The first few times I ordered these bolts I was enticed by the cheaper, imported bolts. The Asian bolts were about 25% the cost of the high quality Holo-Krome bolts we have chosen to use. But I have never once had a product come back due to these bolts breaking. Bearings, springs, keys, pins, et al; be sure they originate here.
Coatings and Second-Party Services: It is very easy to look at two similar products and simply choose the cheaper of the two. Upon looking deeper, ask the manufacturer or vendor if any of the secondary work was completed out of country. Take handlebars for instance. If a shop is offering a set of chrome apehangers for $40 and claiming to be American made, you should probably question the coating. There are many American companies that outsource plating and coating to Mexico and other countries that do not adhere to the same environmental policies American coaters and platers are required to obey. This, along with cheaper labor, equals big savings for the manufacturer. Unfortunately, it also means American jobs and money are being lost. We use a high quality company, St. Louis Plating, for all of our chrome and polishing. This family operated company has been around since 1953, and they provide great finishes at a great price. Do the prices compete with the companies that want us to outsource our plating? No. Not even close. But we do have a great relationship with the crew, and we are more than happy to help their company and family survive.
Assembled Components: Many smaller manufacturers today are taking existing parts and fabricating brackets, mounts, and other components to offer you a new accessory for your bike. Take tag lights for example. There are hundreds of taillight brackets out there, many featuring lights from antique cars, trucks, even school buses and tractors. It is a very common practice to design and produce your own bracket, buy the light from a vendor, and sell the assembled part as your own. But where are those primary components coming from? Many of the replica lights are indeed imported. As a matter of fact, the majority of them are, and many models are not produced in the USA. For years we searched for and American made version of the Model A duolamp bucket. Finally, a few years ago, just as we were going to quit offering our Model A tag bracket, we found one. We pay roughly 2 ½ times more for the American made product, but the difference in quality far outweighs the price. The imported ones were constantly breaking, threads were pulling out, and the glass was junk. We have sold a few hundred of the domestic lights, with not a single one coming back. Ask your vendor or shop where the entire product originates. Shops: Bolting an imported light to your fabricated bracket does not constitute an American made part.
Don’t Trust the Name: There are many age old names and brands out there you may subconsciously consider them to be American. Maybe it is a manufacturer your grandfather proudly swore by when you were a kid. Perhaps it is a producer that constantly advertises with patriotic themes. Hell, you might just be so accustomed to seeing this brand that you assume it is a domestic company. Again, dig a little deeper. For the most part, a quick Web search will turn up the bulk of your answers. If not, make a phone call or send an email. You might just find your assumptions to be way off base. We do this on a regular basis. A great example of this is the retro tires that are big right now; they look and feel just like the originals. You know why? Many of them are made in the very same molds the originals were produced in 50 years ago. The sad part is many of them are now produced in Asia. So our molds have been shipped overseas to produce tires for us. But, the work is being done by people that may not even know what they are making. This is all done in the name of saving a few bucks and making a few more sales.
Many of the “cool” guys you see on the Internet and in the magazines hocking the neat parts and accessories are clearly American. But where are the parts coming from? Don’t just assume the tattooed, bearded gentleman selling you the parts is the same dude making them. Ask him where the parts come from, from the material to the fasteners, even the coating and any other parts. We must hold everyone to this standard. If not, we will continue down this road of unemployment and junk manufactured goods until all we can do is whine. We can make a difference today. You don’t just buy Made in USA stickers and slap them on the box; you earn the right to bear that badge. Those of us that go the extra mile to be sure we are keeping our countrymen employed and providing you with the highest quality parts, have the right to call you out if you are not sticking to the same standards. And we will.

Do you ever take a look back and wonder how your grandparents got along so well with so little? It seems like they were always so happy, even though they were always working, always doing everything themselves, saving a buck every chance they could. You would never see your grandmother pull out a credit card at the grocery store. No, she would pull out crisp bills, which she probably got from your granddad earlier that day, and then poke around in her handbag for the remaining change. And your granddad? He never owed money, except on the mortgage, and maybe a car. He paid cash for everything. And then, after all those years of seeming like they were poor, and on the verge of bankruptcy, you might catch a glimpse of a bank statement or maybe a look at their will. Wow! Grandma and Grandpa are loaded! Nope. They are responsible. They are frugal, they save, and they know what can happen if you are not.
This is a different installment of Buy American or Die, as this will delve a bit more into the editorial realm than the previous articles, but we will also bring you some great info, and hopefully help you realize that the answers to so many of our questions were tried and proven just a generation or two ago. The Greatest Generation endured the Great Depression, World War II, and created a boom like the world had never seen before, and likely never will again. These men and women earned everything they possessed, and a great deal of what we have today. Credit was a last resort, and waste was not an option.
Disposable income is our annual income minus any personal taxes in the same year. Disposable income minus one’s yearly outlays leaves us with our savings. So how is all that relevant? It’s the ratio of debt to income that matters. The more you spend, the fewer savings you have. To make things simple, we will start our comparison in 1950, which is ironically the year the credit card system was introduced in America. The ratio of household debt to household income in 1950 was right around .34:1, meaning for every $1 earned, American families owed someone $.34. Not too bad, right? Well, as the fifties wore on, Americans found themselves wanting more, and borrowing was utilized to realize those wants and needs. In the mid sixties the ratio had risen to approximately .68:1, doubling in just 15 years. It was at this point that things leveled off. As the WWII generation found its way, a comfort level was achieved, and Americans went to work, paid their bills, and raised families. This continued on well into the eighties. The ratio stayed within a few points between the mid sixties and the mid eighties. But as the baby boomers were raising their children and reaching middle age, Americans again found themselves wanting more. This is where the real trouble began. Between 1985 and 2000 the debt to income ratio saw a meteoric rise in America. This time period is where the baby boomers achieved their prime earning years, thus spending more. As the new millennium clicked off, Americans owed more than they earned. The ratio had moved well past the 1:1 point. This means we were now spending more than we were making.
What does this have to do with Buying American? Well, quite frankly, everything. A sense of entitlement has come over Americans. As you might expect, our trade deficit with China began spiraling out of control at the very same time our debt to income ratio started to come out of balance. In 1985, our trade deficit with China was nearly even, with Americans only importing $6 million more than we exported. By 1990 that deficit grew to $10 billion, and to finish the nineties the deficit was just under $70 billion. Since 2000, the trend has gotten really scary, with a record deficit in 2008 of $268 billion. So what’s the correlation? As American consumers buy more and save less, we tend to buy more imported goods. The demand for cheaper products and more of them goes up on a seemingly daily basis.
In a nutshell, Americans are less willing to save for a quality product they can pay cash to buy. We now rely on credit to buy the things to which we believe we are entitled. As our granddads saved to buy a new Chevy, we rush to the car lot to buy the latest $60,000 truck. In the fifties the average new car cost about $2000, and today it is well over $28,000. In 1957 the average home cost $2330 and the average today is $212,800; yes, even in the current depressed housing market. To put those numbers into perspective, the average household income in 1957 was $5000, and in 2007 the number was up to $50,233. So our income has increased ten fold in the past fifty years, yet we pay roughly 100 times more for our housing than we did in the fifties.
I hear someone in my shop or read posts on the Cycle Source forum on almost a daily basis asking why they should pay so much for an American made product when the import is so much cheaper. “I just can’t afford to pay that much for blahblahblah.” Yet they have a new car, a motorcycle, and more house than could ever be needed. Let me tell you this; your greed does not justify buying imported goods that put Americans out of work. If you feel you need to shop at one of the large superstores because you cannot afford to buy quality American products, you must force yourself to examine your spending habits and lifestyle. There is no excuse. Refusing to do so will bite you in the ass folks. Eventually, refusing to be responsible consumers will take your job too, and then your house and your car, and GASP, your motorcycle!
If you have anything more than the bare essentials, you must do your part to Buy American. The great men and women of the middle of the last century fought wars and worked their fingers to the bone to provide the playing field on which we now play. But this playing field is being overrun with weeds that present themselves in the form of lower cost, far inferior products, not the quality that both of my grandfathers put out at McDonnell Douglas. Every time you make a purchase, ask your self, “What would my granddad do in this situation?” If he would save his money to make a purchase, or just flat out save his money, then maybe that’s what you should do.
Please! Take pride in your craft, whatever it may be, and by God, at all costs, support our own. Not only do our grandfathers deserve that respect, but our children don’t stand a fighting chance without it.

Imagine if motorcycles did not exist and someone tried to bring them to market as a new, efficient, fun, space-saving form of transportation. They would never get even considered for government approval for sale.

Notice that she was not teaching the kids how to do wheelies and burnouts (that's our job) just riding along and someone in a truck caused the accident. People think she was the negligent one because she rode a motorcycle that day. At least OSHA was nice enough to not cite Tiffany or the school for her riding a motorcycle that day.

I'll get shit this afternoon from the VA doctor when she sees my helmet. They fuss about us older guys riding at all. They almost freak when they see the big orange Repeal Helmet Laws sticker and I tell them I only wear this "real, legal helmet" so I don't have to hear the nurse fuss about my little beenie. Some folks just don't understand that the rest of us enjoy motorcycles, all kinds. Yeah, I wear a real helmet sometimes. I'm going to get lectured already on what I eat, drink, smoke, do, etc. I think it pisses them off that my blood test results will be near perfect and I'm in good shape.

OSHA tells school district to ban motorcycle travel

Principal was injured in work-related wreck; Board mulls recommendation

The state has recommended that the Eagle Point School District prohibit employees from using motorcycles as transportation to work-related activities after Principal Tiffany O'Donnell was seriously injured Sept. 13 in a motorcycle accident en route between the two rural schools.

Oregon Occupational Safety and Health Division officials said the school district has not violated any regulations, and no citations have been issued to the district. But OSHA cautioned that allowing employees to drive motorcycles for work activities presents a hazard to employees, as well as a liability to the school district.

The agency also recommended that administrators be added to the district's DMV automatic reporting system where the district can check on employees' driving records and licenses to operate a motor vehicle. Neither recommendation is mandatory, according to OSHA.

Administrators are the only district employees excluded from the automatic reporting system, but Eagle Point schools Superintendent Cynda Rickert said the district's human resources department already has taken steps to change that.

"We don't know if the Board will move forward on a policy not allowing you to drive a motorcycle if you are doing school business," she said.

O'Donnell, principal of both Elk Trail Elementary School and Shady Cove School, was driving her Suzuki motorcycle from the Trail campus to the Shady Cove campus when she was struck by a Nissan pickup truck. The driver was making an illegal U-turn on Highway 62, police said. O'Donnell's right leg and pelvis were broken in the crash, and she underwent multiple surgeries at Oregon Health & Science University in Portland to reconstruct her leg. She is now at home in Medford recovering from her injuries.

Tiffanie Lambert, a White Mountain Middle School teacher, is substituting for O'Donnell during her absence.

Eagle Point school administrators are expected to drive their personal vehicle for work purposes, but it hadn't occurred to district officials to dictate what kind of vehicle they drive, Rickert said.

She said the School Board would like to consult with the Oregon School Boards Association, which guides districts in crafting or amending policies, before making a decision on whether to ban motorcycles for school business.

"We can surely see some merit in the recommendation," she said. "There is always another side to this. Would that then mean we would have to purchase more vehicles for our employees to use? We're hoping OSBA can tell us that."

NAFTA – North American Free Trade Ripoff?

When NAFTA was officially ratified in 1993 the American public cried out. A lot of the outcry came from US labor unions, and from pundits that could not believe that Bill Clinton had betrayed those that supported him only months before. But NAFTA has affected far more than just our labor unions and their members, and it started before Slick Willie.
In the late 1980s, Canada and the US entered into a similar agreement known as the Canada-United States Free Trade Agreement. This agreement went virtually unnoticed by the American public, as we had been conducting trade with Canada for years, and alarms of job cuts were not sounded. As the US entered talks with Mexico for a policy like that with Canada, the Canadian government voiced a concern that their previously won partnership with the US was endangered, and they requested to be part of the talks. From this NAFTA was born. As Europe looked on and learned, eventually the European Union came to be as well.
The goal of NAFTA was to create a level playing field for businesses in all three countries, and better value for consumers. The basic premise was elimination of tariffs and various non-tax trade barriers. The three countries all agreed on duty free or equally taxed imports and exports, with a few exceptions. This in essence would make trade across borders fair, and would be a win-win situation for both business and consumer. Each country could play off their respective strengths and natural resources, and in turn purchase other products at more affordable rates. The playing field was not level, however, as the state of Mexico’s economy, coupled with a corrupt government, made fair trade an unattainable goal. The EPA regulations that American businesses are forced to adhere to were not included, nor were workplace safety guidelines. Two huge costs that every American businessman is all to familiar with. The Canadian government has long enforced rules akin to ours, but Mexico has not. With these regulations missing from the Agreement, and the poor economy in Mexico, it was clear that advantage could be taken of this arrangement.
To Clinton’s credit, a few clauses were added to the agreement to shield the American workforce, and of course the environment. However, as both the senate and congress agreed and passed the bill, not much was said about two developed countries entering a trade agreement with a third, developing country. And therein lies the problem; as many manufacturers sought to cut costs, the low paying sweat shops and scarce workplace safety protections of Mexico became very attractive. As Mexico is not an established industrial nation, the pay level, and subsequently, the standard of living, is not on par with that of the US or Canada. So, once again a race to the bottom is started. American companies quickly set up shop in Mexico to reap these benefits. Companies like GM and Swingline who opened factories south of the border in order to save on payroll and keep the shareholders happy.
As the big factories geared up and shareholders began realizing larger profits, a whole new industry blossomed along the borders; maquiladores. Maquiladores are Mexican factories just south of the border that specialize in unassembled American goods being imported and then assembled. The finished goods are then shipped back to the US and sold as “American Made.” These sweatshops primarily employ female workers, and they enjoy none of the benefits that we Americans take for granted. The work days can stretch on well past 12 hours, there is little to no job security, no employer assisted health care ever offered, and at best, the pay is 10% that of similar jobs in the US. The maquiladores can be American owned or Mexican, and it varies from one industry to another.
So what does this mean? Consider the fact that between NAFTA’s inception in 1993 and 2002, 879,280 jobs were lost in America, and that job loss is a proven result of NAFTA running its course. Prior to NAFTA, American’s sold $1.5 billion more goods to Mexico than we bought. In 2007 we bought $75 billion more than we sold. Are we really that unable to manufacture and assemble our own consumables?
Everyone’s favorite chocolate, the Hershey bar, is made right here in Pennsylvania, right? Nope. Well, not all of them, and if the folks at Hershey have their way, none of them will be before too long. In 2007 Hershey announced they would be cutting 1500 jobs from US workers and replacing them with a new plant in Mexico. The company cited a “global supply-chain transformation” as the reason for moving operations to Mexico. Right! Like that many Mexicans are gobbling up Hershey bars on a daily basis. CEO Richard H. Lenny commented that the decision was “gut-wrenchingly difficult — but in the best interests of the business.” I’m sure Milton Hershey would be proud, Dick. Within a month or two the job cuts doubled to 3000. This month was estimated to save the company $190 million annually. Doing the math real quick those 3000 jobs are valued at $63,000 each. These savings have made the Hershey folks awfully happy, as new job cuts and plant closures have been announced on a regular basis.
Should we demand our government stop all trade with the outside world? No. We have the power to change the way things work much easier. Quit buying candy bars from Hershey. Buy a Staplex stapler instead of the Swingline. Do some research next time you want to buy a car, and find the one that is made more in the US than anywhere else. Do your homework. The government is not going to do it for you, and no one is going to be there when your job is cut. You don’t think your job will be cut? Well ask anyone who use to be an auto maker in Michigan.
As I drive through the old part of St. Louis, where the abandoned factories and warehouses are that once supplied the western half of the country, I have to wonder, is this what the entire country will look like soon? Will every industrial park in America look like the ghost town that Detroit has become? Or can business boom again and those factories and warehouses bustle with American feet once again?

China. Where do we start? Or better yet, where do we end? China’s unfair trade policies and inferior quality are only a few of the problems that are contributing to American unemployment and diminishing wages, but they are two very noticeable and influential forces shaping the US economy. We could seriously write an entire series on China, from human rights violations to pollution to communism and Maoism, but we will try to focus only on the changes over the years in our policy and theirs, and how said changes have impacted our society.

According to the USCBC, or United States China Business Council, in fiscal year 2000, the United States exported $16.3 billion worth of products to China, while importing $100 billion worth of goods. That’s a difference of $83.7 billion! Wouldn’t you guys like to have a bite of all that extra work? Well, fast forward to fiscal year 2008. Our economy exported $71.5 billion to China, but we imported $409.2 BILLION! This is a difference of $266.3 billion. To put this in perspective, this deficit totals about $873 per US citizen. You can do the fuzzy math on how you subtract the retired, young, and incapable, and see quickly how this money would translate into American jobs and income in a heartbeat. To be fair, in 2009 our exports to China decreased about 2.6% and our imports decreased about 10.6%. Make you feel better? Well, it shouldn’t. 2009 was the first year in quite some time that the US was not ranked as the World’s Most Competitive Economy, according to the World Economic Forum. This means we had fewer jobs, lower pay, and fewer benefits than another country (Switzerland). So even though our imports from China fell, you can rest assured it wasn’t because we are turning the corner to manufacturing independence. It’s more like we were too broke to buy more crap from China to fill our living rooms and driveways.

So how does this relate to your job? One comparison is the unemployment rate. The unemployment rate in January 2000 was 4.00%, and at the end of 2009 sat at 10%. There are many factors that make us lose our jobs, and outsourcing manufacturing to China is only one of them, but it is a huge one. According to the Economic Policy Institute, from 1997 through 2001 growing US trade deficits displaced an average of 101,000 jobs per year. Upon China’s entrance into the World Trade Organization in 2001 the US has lost on average of 353,000 jobs per year. And an estimated ¾ of those jobs are manufacturing. Still think bu

ying Chinese toys won’t affect your neighbor? Will you still argue buying a Chinese made Springer for your bike won’t cost anyone’s job? I beg to differ.

As staunch supporters of and believers in the Constitution of The United States of America, we firmly believe we as Americans should be free to buy or sell to whom and from whom we please. That being said, our government should provide a level playing field for the import and export of goods. This is currently not the case. In addition to unfair labor practices, zero environmental policy, and major human rights violations, China imposes many non-tariff trade barriers on US goods. These blockades have contributed more and more to the large trade deficit the US suffers from. China’s trade surplus is responsible for 42.6% of the US’ total non oil trade deficit, again, according to the EPI.

So, as many Americans are trying to buy more with less, American businessmen are trying to provide more for less, and spending far less to produce it. Upon China’s induction to the WTO in 2001, the goal was to bring China up to the same standards developed countries were holding themselves to already. As is with bureaucracy, there were major oversights. The agreement failed to provide for any enforcement of labor or environmental standards. These, as any American manufacturer will tell you, are arguably the largest expenditures in a manufacturing facility. As China provides cheap products to the rest of the world, they impose poor standards upon their citizens and rape the environment. These phenomena have created a “race to the bottom.” This essentially means China and other under developed (and oftentimes communist) countries are trying to “outcheap” one another and offer the lowest possible labor and manufacturing rates. This can be quite alluring to businessmen who know quality has taken a backseat to quantity in our country. Sad.

I’d like to add a personal story that pertains to both motorcycles and the poor Chinese products that are flooding our market. Recently we built a chopper at our shop for the upcoming Hoka Hey Challenge. We as always used only American made products: HD engine, Baker trans, Tech Cycles primary, Ride Wright Wheels, etc. In one case, however, the racer’s sponsor provided a fairing for the bike. This fairing was from a very well known and established builder/manufacturer; one that I admire and respect, if not for what he does, but for what he has done. But it was not made here. No, it was made in China. The manufacturer claimed the fairing would bolt right on to the narrow glide frontend we were running. Well, not so. A great deal of work had to go into making the tube clamps work, the bolts were way too short, and the windshield came back so far you couldn’t possibly get handlebars in the risers. Of course, as I trimmed and re-drilled the windshield, it cracked and I got to spend another $70 to replace this piece of crap. Looking at the kit, I estimated the total cost of producing this part, in America, at around $25. The part retails for $200, and it is a complete piece of junk. I have to guess it was imported at a cost of maybe $5. I was so disgusted with the part it made me completely rethink my opinion of the man whose name was on the box. It is reprehensible that an industry so purely American has to cash in on our fellow Americans with imported Chinese junk. Shame on you!

We will also examine new businesses that are cropping up lately that service the repair and correction of Chinese made goods. You will be surprised how much that cheap part you buy for your bike actually costs you in the long run. But next month…NAFTA.

I had a little frustration with the folks at Primo lately. Basically their tech guy is swamped, and I needed to talk to him. After trying a couple times to call, I sent an email. Within an hour or so, I received a call from the Vice President of the company. John was very apologetic and helped me with my question, and made sure I got the part I needed. To say he went above and beyond is a complete understatement.

I just wanted to post this to show that an American manufacturer of high quality motorcycle parts can still step up and take care of the customer.

The down side of the story is the reason for their tech guy being swamped. You guessed it... downsizing. After years of innovation and quality, Rivera is feeling the heat of the Asian imports and our government's unwillingness to support our own.

America’s Manufacturing Decline - The US has been the lone world superpower for some years now, and economically we have been the undisputed leader since the industrial revolution. This is something too many Americans take for granted, and it is changing, quickly, and not for the better. America is losing manufacturing jobs at an alarming rate. There are numerous reasons for this trend. I would argue the primary cause to be our greed, but that is a question we must all ask ourselves. Let’s take a look at how our economy is affected by importing goods to save a buck, as opposed to keeping ourselves employed.
Gross domestic product (GDP) is the measure of America’s overall economic output. It is the market value of all final goods and services made within our country in a specific year. Knowing our GDP can be very useful in understanding our country’s economic performance. Basically, we want a higher GDP, as that indicates our economy is producing more, and hopefully, in turn we are earning more. GDP is not a direct indicator of our earnings, but GDP per capita is. Currently the US ranks number 10 in GDP per capita. That means there are nine countries producing more per person than we are.
Our nation’s debt relative to GDP is also very indicative of our financial well-being. The national debt of countries represents how much money the government of that country owes. Like a household budget, national debt gets larger when a government spends more than it takes in. This can continue for years, or even decades. This budget deficit is the total amount of this debt that has grown over time, with interest charged adding significantly to the amount owed by the government. It gets scary when your debt overcomes your GDP. Currently America’s national debt totals approximately $12.28 trillion, and the GDP for 2009 was $14.2 trillion. And the worst part? Our debt grows at an estimated $3.8 billion per day. An easy fix is to increase GDP, and in turn lessen our national debt, as we owe less money and interest for the products purchased, tariffs paid, etc. Our GDP shrunk almost 3% in 2009, yet our unemployment rate is hanging around 10%. For the fiscal year 2009, US exports totaled $1.057 trillion, while our imports totaled $1.558 trillion! This is completely inexcusable for a country that is fully capable of developing, manufacturing, selling, and delivering everything needed and desired.
America was at the top of its manufacturing game in the decades following World War II. Hundreds of factories and assembly lines were left vacant after the war production halted, and thousands of soldiers returned home eager to enjoy their freedom and make an honest day’s wage. This led to a time of great expansion and an economic boom. Companies across the US flourished, and households had TVs, lawnmowers, new cars; more than those hard working GIs ever imagined. But then something began to change; a new generation began to shape and influence our country. Baby Boomers came of age, and wanted more. Instead of waiting and saving their money to buy desired items, products were bought on credit. Cheaper alternatives were sought out. Quantity was placed in front of quality. All characteristics the previous generation avoided like the plague. A very evil seed was planted. As “more and cheap” was becoming the focal point of US business, imports became very attractive. Low labor rates, non-existent environmental policies, and low tariffs made shipping jobs overseas very lucrative. In 1979, the US boasted nearly 20 million manufacturing jobs. As we entered 2010, we were down to a little over 11 million manufacturing jobs. For each manufacturing job there are approximately three (some say five or more) support staff jobs created. This means janitorial, accounting, transportation, security, etc. So when you go looking for shoes, or yard tools, or parts for your motorcycle, don’t think that buying an import won’t eventually trickle down to you. It affects us all. If we were to regain the jobs lost over the last 31 years, and added the three support jobs that accompany those, we would add somewhere around 27 million jobs. In April of this year, America reported 15.3 million unemployed. Now, we all understand there are literally dozens of other factors that weigh on employment and jobs. But damn, wouldn’t it be nice to still have all those manufacturing jobs?
While America is still the world’s largest manufacturer, we are quickly losing ground. Countries like China, Mexico, and Taiwan offer low rates and quick lead times, which easily lure American consumers into the wrong aisle. Next month we will discuss arguably the biggest problem, China. The statistics will startle you, and maybe make you fear for your job. In the meantime, please, Buy American.
